Is it a valve in the exhaust that reduces the flow at lower revs, such as fitted in some K series cars, the default fail on these is open. They are controlled by vaccum pressure in the inlet.

Sounds like this tbh, though could be slightly higher tech in the ST, would the ECU control it instead of a vacumn??
