Welcome Scott, sorry to hear about the car! Such a shame when these sort of things happen, especially when you keep up on regular maintenance and look after the car.
I'm pretty certain that I almost had a similar result to what you did, I picked up my second ZS in March last year. It was advertised as mint, although I am the ninth owner (I think) which did ring a few alarm bells, but I went ahead and bought it with the heart, not the head! The fella I bought it off came to pick me up from the train station in the car and all seemed well. I remember him telling me that it had just had an oil change, and a basic service which I thought was an added bonus. The car drove the 250 mile journey home without fault, although it was the following morning that I remember the car developing a cold start knock. It didn't affect performance and I carried on using it, until it came to changing the oil. The oil that I drained out of it was full of metal (the picture is on the forum somewhere). Shortly after this, I decided that it'd be best to change the engine for a known good one, as the cost and time of a strip and rebuild couldn't be justified, and I'm pretty sure with more wear and tear on it, it would have ended up like yours!
I fitted the replacement engine myself in January & February of this year. The car clearly had the fault when I bought it, and I think it was for this reason that it was "passed around", hence why it has had a few owners.
If you intend to change the engine yourself, have a look around the forum. There was a forum member who wrote a thread about swapping a KV6 engine a few years back which I used as a guide, and I also wrote a thread about my engine swap experience as well!
All the best with it, it's a cracking looking car and I hope you get it sorted for the Summer!
