Angry The Great Insurance Rip Off

All,

Just looking for some advice - I have just phoned my insurer (Egg) to see how much some mods would increase my quote by.

Ended up telling them that I already had a different to standard exhaust (idiot) and they then said that they wanted £123 from me for the privilage (bar stewards).

Anyhow after having a bit of a rant and wanting to raise a complaint I got off the phone without asking my original question. Ended up getting a quote for an extra £112 for these mods; induction kit (they put this down as an air filter?), sports cat and exhuast but an increase in my excess of £200. As long as the modifications don't improve BHP by more than 10% - should be within this.

Anyone got any comments / suggestions - is this reasonable, should I go elsewhere? Cheers...

Certainly shop around a few places and ALWAYS tell them there is no performance gain just the look and sound or like with stainless exhausts that it is just so you dont keep replacing them. Nothing illegal about that as you have told them the mod is there.

I am with Cornhill i think it is through a broker who in turn quoted through confused.com. Am sure there is a modified option on confused for you to list mods so it would be worth getting a quote from them. Personally wouldnt touch tescos, egg, directline or any others of the group (they are all part of the direct finance and insurance group) after the trouble i had from them.

Try Greenlight Insurance and you won't be disappointed considering the quote they gave me......albeit before I realised my **** up with my NCB.

I told them I had changed the exhaust for a stainless one and fitted an induction kit, no increase. I'm with Admiral as I insure three cars in our house and my 180 is £303 fully comp.

I am with Adrian Flux. Declared the "BMC air filter" and "complete stainless steel exhaust system from engine to tailpipe" with no increase in premium.

Cheers for the replies so far.

So far Admiral are the cheapest through Confused including planned mods, but LV are £100 cheaper (need to check excesses though) I have given Greenlight the details and will see what quote they come back with and I will check out Adrian Flux tomorrow. I have heard that Adrian Flux can be a bit iffy with claims and changes though - mind you this was years ago...

My mk1 180 was written off in October through an accident that wasn't my fault. (White van man, you get the picture!) Adrian Flux have been commendable throughout the claim and I definitely have no complaints about their service.

Even today when declaring changes to my mk2 it wasn't a problem for them. They simply added the changes to the policy with no ifs and buts. Sorted.

It'll be Adrian Flux for me come renewal time. They specialise in guys like us that take the time to mod our cars properly and look after them. If you tell them you are an owners club member you get 10% off too!

Steer well clear of Confused.com and other comparison sites, they bump up the peremiums to take a cut for themselves. Always phone the insurer directly for the best price

But it gives you a starting point and you know that when you phone direct you'll be getting a cheaper price.

Thank you once again for your replies and the benefit of your experience. I have just cancelled with Egg and gone to Adrian Flux - cheers for the recommendation DemonPaul. My refund from Egg for 8 or 9 months was £499 and the policy with Adrian Flux was £464 including the mods, with the same excess (others were increased) and they were great to deal with.

I now have to go and obtain an induction kit and decide whether to sports cat or de-cat my Zed. If I do de-cat then the guy who does the MOT on it said to put the std cat back on for him to MOT (if required). Looks like I now need a BMC CDA (cannot afford the ITG really), I will review the info here to see about a de-cat / sports cat.

Later...

Greg
