Sounds like an easy fix if that's what it is.... but if not then where would you start?

No if i had the money i would buy it, reset the switch and drive home a happy man. Much like we did with a mates Rover 75 cdti. Guy had the clutch replaced only to find a week later it "went" again. so 3 grands worth of 75 bought for 1400 quid drove it round the corner after starting it in gear, spent 2 hours bleeding the clutch (at the cost of 8 quid for some brake fluid) and drove like a dream.

Hope your 'mate' didn't find out how simple that fault was!!!!! jeeezzzz.........I would have been kicking myself big time!
